Assigned Amount Unit (AAU)

Assigned amount units (AAUs) are units issued by Parties to the Kyoto Protocol into their national registry up to their assigned amount, calculated by reference to their base year emissions and their quantified emission limitation and reduction commitment (expressed as a percentage).  AAUs are defined in 3/CMP.1, Annex, paragraph 1(b) as follows:

An "assigned amount unit" or "AAU" is a unit issued pursuant to the relevant provisions in the annex to decision 13/CMP.1 and is equal to one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent, calculated using global warming potentials defined by decision 2/CP.3 or as subsequently revised in accordance with Article 5 (3/CMP.1, Annex, paragraph 1(c)).
