What is registration?

Registration of afforestation or reforestation (A/R) projects is defined in 5/CMP.1, Annex, paragraph 11:

Registration is the formal acceptance by the Executive Board of a validated project as an afforestation or reforestation project activity under the CDM. Registration is the prerequisite for the verification, certification and issuance of tCERs or lCERs relating to that project activity (5/CMP.1, Annex, paragraph 11).

This decision applies to small-scale A/R (SSC A/R) projects also:

The modalities and procedures for afforestation and reforestation project activities under the CDM shall apply to small-scale afforestation and reforestation project activities under the CDM except for paragraphs 12-30 (6/CMP.1, Annex, paragraph 3).

Therefore, registration is a key stage in the CDM project cycle, representing the point where a SSC A/R project activity is accepted as a CDM project, making it eligible to generate temporary certified emission reductions (tCERs) or long-term certified emission reductions (lCERs).
